The Ice Cream Girl Maria in the news!

Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz tapped a beloved Bensonhurst native, Maria Campanella, to present his official greetings, a message that will open Mae West’s star-studded birthday party..

Brooklyn’s Maria Campanella says that whenever she reads a story about a local hero in a newspaper, she breaks down in tears. “I wind up crying,” she said. “I don’t know the person, but I’m proud of them. I want to be like them.” Which is funny, because a lot of people around her neighborhood ? where she’s better known as “Maria the Ice Cream Lady” ? would say she’s a pretty big heroine herself.

THE BURNING PAVEMENT had the three girls hopping from one bare foot to the other. Maria Campanella leaned out of her ice cream truck and doused the sidewalk with a water bottle. “How’s that?” Maria asked.

When Maria Campanella gets mad, she doesn’t just get even, she becomes president of the Brooklyn chapter of MADD – Mothers Against Drunk Driving.”Actually, I’m not a mother, so I think about it as Maria Against Drunk Driving,” she says, laughing as she tools through Bensonhurst in her six-wheel THE ICE CREAM GIRL MARIA ice cream truck – bells ringing, kids gathering – a route her father, Chubby Campanella, founded 58 years ago.

If it’s spring, then Angelo Campanella aka Chubby, the ice cream man can be found every morning hanging out the window of his truck selling his wares at Cunningham Junior High.

He’s been at it 54 years including the last 31 at the Gravesend, Brooklyn, school.
